Edna Strickland "reveals" Marty McFly's "real name"

To further his deception, Citizen Brown told Edna Strickland that "Yakov" was an anarchist who came to ruin the science expo. Edna relayed the news to Danny Parker, who closed the exhibit to Emmett's Electrokinetic levitator. Though the later revelation that she was the arsonist of the Hill Valley speakeasy resulted in her request being denied.

During later encounters with Marty, she continued to refer to his as Yakov or Mr. Smirnoff rather than his chosen 1931 alias.

Behind the scenes

Yakov Smirnoff (January 24, 1951 in Odessa, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union) was a comedian in the mid-1980s who had emigrated from the Soviet Union to the United States, and whose routine consisted of jokes about Communism. Following the examples in the Back to the Future trilogy in which Marty chooses the name of a real person from the future (such as Calvin Klein and Clint Eastwood) for an alias, Edna Strickland would not have heard of Yakov Smirnoff in 1931 (though he didn't exist until 19/20 years later).
