Libyanchase

The Libyan terrorists find Doc Brown at the mall.

"Damn!"
—Libyan driver's barely intelligible curse, when his van stalled.

The Volkswagen Station Wagon[1], and informally called the Volkswagen Bus, is a van manufactured by Volkswagen, a German automobile company. The Type 2 model nicknamed the "Breadloaf" or "Bay-window" was built in Germany from 1968 until 1979, with production shifting to Mexico in 1980.[2]

The Libyan terrorists drove a blue Type 2 Volkswagen Station Wagon through Courthouse Square on their way to Twin Pines Mall, on a mission of revenge against Dr. Emmett Brown for stealing their plutonium. One drove the vehicle while the other stood through the sunroof with an AK-47 assault rifle.

The vehicle crashed into and totaled a Fox Photo booth when the DeLorean time machine that it was chasing suddenly disappeared.

Behind the scenes

  • In the novelization by George Gipe, the Libyans' vehicle is a black van (confirmed as such on page 63), which is described earlier in the book as follows:
"Square except for the long sloping hood, it was an ominous van, dark in color, with windows that seemed to have been blacked either by painting or the installation of dark curtains."
—Quote, page 59
  • Another Volkswagen Station Wagon, yellow in color, can be seen parked at the roadside at the end of Back to the Future and the beginning of Back to the Future Part II.
