The Universal Studios Backlot is the term for filming sites for town scenes at the studios at Universal Studios locations in Hollywood, California and Orlando, Florida.

The Backlot is shown as part of the Studio Tour at the Universal Studios Hollywood theme park. The popularity of the Studio Tour led to a smaller version called the Production Studio Tour to be shown at the Universal Studios Florida theme park in Orlando, from the opening of the park on June 7, 1990, to 1995, when the attraction closed. Although the Production Tour has closed, the Backlot in the Florida studio is still used for filming.

Emmett Brown visited the Universal Studios Florida Backlot on May 1, 1990, the day the theme park was supposed to open before its opening was postponed to the next month.

Large portions of the Universal Studios Hollywood Backlot were destroyed by fire on two occasions: on November 7, 1990 and June 1, 2008.

The sets were completely rebuilt after the first fire, and reconstruction after the 2008 fire continued until the Backlot portion of the Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour was reopened on May 27, 2010.

Behind the scenes

The Backlot at Universal Studios Hollywood was the primary filming site for the Courthouse Square scenes in the Back to the Future trilogy. The sets were redesigned for each time period, representing the time periods 1985, 1955, 2015 and 1985A. An area in Northern California represented Courthouse Square in 1885.
