Ulysses S. Clayton was a Union Army General during the American Civil War. He led his troops in the Battle of Chattanooga in 1864 against the forces of Confederate Army Sean Tannen.

Before the battle, a snake oil salesman attempted to sell Clayton an "electric magnetic machine" which electrocuted him instead of soothing him. Doc Brown and Verne Brown devised a plan that would use the device to create an electromagnet that could disarm the armies. After the intervention by the Brown family, in the form of the two brothers embracing, Clayton's and Tannen's men stood down and a truce between Clayton and Tannen was formed.

Ulysses Clayton was Clara Clayton's uncle. In the 1870s, he visited his brother Daniel and his family at his home in New Jersey. While her mother was serving the meal, Clara noticed that she was struggling to ignore her rebellious nature to act as a proper 19th century housewife. Due to this incident, and unsuccessful relationships of her own, Clara decided that the life of an unmarried woman suited her and became a schoolteacher.
