Ulysses S. Clayton was a Union Army General during the American Civil War. He led his troops in the Battle of Chattanooga in 1864 against the forces of Confederate Army General Beauregard Tannen.

Before the battle, a salesman attempted to sell Clayton a "electric magnetic machine" which electrocuted him instead of soothing him. Doc Brown and Verne Brown devised a plan that would use the device to create an electromagnet that could disarm the armies. After the intervention by the Brown family, in the form of the two brothers embracing, Clayton's and Tannen's men stood down and a truce between Clayton and Tannen was formed.

Ulysses Clayton was Clara Clayton's uncle.
