When trying to persuade a heartbroken Emmett Brown to continue his path on science, Marty brings up Thomas Edison and the light bulb as an example of an invention that has made a positive difference.[2]

Shortly after, Marty claimed that he didn't have the guts to follow his dreams, and dismissed his aspirations as daydreams. Emmett responded by pointing out that Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein and Dr. Frankenstein all had daydreams, and went on to make great accomplishments.

In 1991, Doc traveled to August 12, 1927 to witness the Diamond Jubilee of the phonograph. He had Thomas Edison sign a giant light bulb, and filmed this moment for his "Doc on the March" segment of a video which would be shown at the Institute of Future Technology.
