The Time Machine was a novel written by H.G. Wells in 1895.

It told the story of a man — referred to in the narrative as simply 'the Time Traveller' (U.K. spelling) — who invents a time machine and uses it to travel to the far future of 802701, where humans have divided into two separate species. The novel was subsequently adapted into a film in both 1960 and 2002, though the former is truer to Wells's original story.

In 1931, Marty McFly asked the young Emmett Brown if he had read The Time Machine. Emmett replied that he hadn't yet, but intended to.

Behind the scenes

  • One promotional video for Back to the Future featured Michael J. Fox sitting in the H.G. Wells time machine as it appeared in the 1960 film adaptation.[1]
  • The 1979 film Time After Time, which imagined H.G. Wells as being the time traveler, featured Mary Steenburgen as character Amy Robbins.
  • The red, green and yellow colors of the DeLorean time machine's time circuits display may have been inspired by the dashboard of the 1960 adaption's time machine, which featured those same colors on its year display.
