A hymnal was a book of hymns which were sung during a church service, either by the congregation or by a choir. When the Brown family was stranded among the very religious settlers of Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, they adapted to their circumstances. As a game, Jules and Verne were invited by the other children to play with them, in seeing who could stack the books the highest. Jules told Marty McFly later that he won the game the last time he played because of his vast knowledge of physics. Verne was not a fan of the game.
