A scratch and listen postcard was a postcard that allowed the sender to record their voice, and by scratching the card the receiver was able to hear the message.

Doc Brown sent one of these postcards by using a remote control mail delivery time machine capable of one jump back home where Marty McFly was. Marty heard the message and took the DeLorean time machine and a spare flux capacitor to 1692 Salem, Massachusetts.
