San Francisco was a large city in Northern California, the end of the line of the Central Pacific Railroad. Clara Clayton purchased a ticket to San Francisco before leaving Hill Valley. When Clara realized that Doc Brown loved her so much, she stopped the train and ran back to town to find him.

In 1906, the city suffered a 7.9MW earthquake that destroyed much of the city, leaving many people homeless. The Hill Valley Courthouse was used as a shelter for many of the victims of the disaster.^[1]
