Rome was the capital of the Roman Empire. Emmett Brown traveled there in the year 36 to return some architectural plans, and brought Marty McFly along, however Jules and Verne Brown stowed away to play some "Roman video games".

Once there, Marty under the alias of "Marticus" insulted Bifficus Antanneny and was challenged to a chariot race.
