Frances Lee McCain (born October 28, 1944), also sometimes credited as Lee McCain, who portrayed Lorraine Baines's mother Stella Baines in the first Back to the Future film, has an established resume on stage as well as in films, having appeared on Broadway in Woody Allen's Play it Again Sam, and off-Broadway in Lanford Wilson's Lemon Sky, creating the role of Carol. In films, she has had notable roles such as Lynn Peltzer, the mother of main character Billy Peltzer in the 1984 blockbuster hit film Gremlins. Also that year, she played the Ethel McCormack in Footloose.

A San Diego, California native who also spent her early years in upstate New York, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, McCain graduated from Ripon College with a BA in Philosophy and then studied acting for three years at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, England.
