Biography[]

BTTF USA Today actual prop

The FROM THE CAPITOL [sic] box-out on the front page of USA Today (in the top right-hand corner) announces Queen Diana's visit.

According to the Newsline column on the front page of the October 22, 2015 issue of USA Today, she was to visit Washington, D.C. "tomorrow and the capital prepares". The visit was also announced in the FROM THE CAPITOL [sic] box-out in the top right-hand corner.

Cafe 80's served a dish named on the menu as "Princess Di Spud Cake" for "3$".

In this timeline, Diana was still alive and still married to Charles, Prince of Wales. Queen Elizabeth II had died and Charles inherited the throne, thus upon his assentation to the throne his wife Diana had become Queen Consort.

Actuality[]

  • Princess Diana died in a car accident on August 31, 1997 in France, long after these predictions were made. Additionally, it is uncertain whether Diana would have even been Queen, as she and Prince Charles divorced in 1996, and were having marital problems as early as 1987. On top of everything, Queen Elizabeth II was still alive in 2015.
  • When USA Today celebrated Back to the Future Day in 2015 with a wraparound replica of the film's newspaper,[1] the only news removed was the Queen Diana one, replaced by a report on holobillboard-induced car accidents.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Bob Gale jokingly said (on the audio commentary) that he had no idea about the 1997 death of Princess Diana when he wrote the script in 1989, but said he probably should have considered that as a possibility.
  • Another sign of things nobody could have predicted is when, in 2015, Lorraine McFly changes the channels on the scene screen from a garden, to a tropical beach, to a nighttime city scene that includes the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, which were destroyed in the September 11 attacks of 2001. However, it is possible that Lorraine was watching a past documentary about the city of New York.
  • When Charles came to the throne in 2022 upon his mother's death on September 8, becoming King Charles III, his current wife Camilla Parker Bowles was officially recognized as Queen Consort.
