" 'This one has a very interesting feature — a dust jacket.' She [the saleswoman] pulled the jacket loose to show him [Marty]. The actual cover underneath was identical in design to the dust jacket: silver, with red lettering and pictures of sports figures. 'Books used to have these to protect the covers — of course, that was before they switched to dust repellent paper,' she explained, re-attaching it. 'And if you're interested in dust, we also have this quaint little device from the 1980's; it was called a "DustBuster".' "
—From Back to the Future Part II by Craig Shaw Gardner (quote, pages 51 and 52)

Dust-repellent paper was developed for books sometime between 2001 and 2015, replacing the dust jacket commonly found on covers.

The dust jacket in 2015 was considered an interesting feature of the Grays Sports Almanac by the saleswoman during her salespitch to Marty McFly in the Blast from the Past antique/memorabilia store. She also recommended to Marty — if he happened to be particularly interested in dust and/or dust-related products — a DustBuster from the 1980s, which was also in the window display.

Behind the scenes[]

  • On page 52 of the novelization (see Quote above), the DustBuster was mistakenly referred to as a dustbuster (small 'd' and small 'b', instead of capital 'D' and capital 'B'). This error has been corrected here.

Actuality[]

  • Dust-repellent paper has yet to be invented. However, several dust-repellent coatings for various materials are under development and may soon enter the market.
