An airplane is a powered, fixed-wing aircraft that is propelled forward by thrust from a jet engine or propeller.
The Wright brothers invented and built the world's first successful airplane, when they made the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight on December 17, 1903, four miles south of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
Doc Brown was present during the first flight. He was caught on film, expressing his excitement on witnessing the event, as the airplane passed overhead.
In the years following the first flight, commercial airlines became common. USAir was an airline that remained in operation in 2015 in the original timeline. They offered flights to Vietnam for surfers.
